Synopsis:
After beating Jake Lamotta in February 1949, Laurent Dauthuille won two more fights in Montreal in August and October against Johnny Greco and Sonny Horne respectively. Those wins set up a big fight against future HOFer Kid Gavilan (born Gerardo Gonzalez).
Gavilan, The Cuban Hawk, was 55-8-2 going into the match with Dauthuille, having lost a decision earlier that year to the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson in a bid for the welterweight title.
Despite being the betting underdog against Dauthuille, Gavilan won a clear unanimous decision. The fight attracted 11,533 fans, who produced a live gate of $54,610, a record for an indoor fight in Montreal at the time.
