Date: June 26, 1934
Venue: Montreal Forum
Attendance: 9,000
Result: Escobar KO9 Casanova
Synopsis: Sixto Escobar returned to the Forum a mere 20 days after knocking out Leitham in their rematch. This time he took on Rodolfo “Baby” Casanova for the Montreal Athletic Commission version of the world bantamweight title. Title claims were disputed back then just as they are today, and despite winning the Montreal version of the title, Escobar was not yet considered the true world bantamweight champion. That is a title he would later earn in 1936.
Nonetheless, Escobar was dominant in Montreal once again, stopping Casanova in the ninth round. And Casanova was no slouch, entering the fight with a record of 29-3, and who would retire with a record of 81-22-3, having earned wins over Hall of Famers Henry Armstrong, Midget Wolgast, and Baby Arizmendi. Escobar would be inducted into the IBHOF in 2002.
